Homework - Multi-Tasking or Distracting?

At a recent education conference I attended, there was a lot of buzz about the "multi-tasking" learner. Essentially, educators are recognizing that today's students are plugged into their iPods®, surfing the internet, and text-messaging their friends all at the same time. So, there is a new push to educate students in that same "multi-tasking" mode.

While I would love to see mainstream education embrace more forms of media, teaching students several things, with many different forms of media -all at the same time- sets off an alarm for me! Our brains are not physiologically programmed to ACTIVELY learn more than one thing at a time.

Yes, you can walk and chew gum at the same time. However, when adolescents are text-messaging, surfing the internet, and listening to their favorite tunes concurrently, their attention is not focused on three things at once, it is rapidly shifting from one thing to another. That is okay when their primary objective is entertainment or to communicate with a friend, but it does not work when the objective is (or should be) learning. Unfortunately, a lot of students double their homework time by trying to "multi-task."

Case in point...

Cassie, an 11th grade student in one of my recent Homework Action Groups, discovered that multi-tasking was not working for her. During our first class, she complained that homework took her 3.5-4 hours every night. Together, we worked out a goal to reduce her homework time by 45 minutes within one month and 1.5 hours within two months. She reduced her homework time by an hour after only two weeks, mostly because she "unplugged" other distractions and just did homework.
Six weeks later, she was averaging about 1.5 hours of homework each night, largely because she improved her focus while doing homework.

** Action Plan **

Cassie shared the following tips about how she managed to reduce her homework time:

- "I turned off everything." Cassie said she originally started doing her homework while watching TV or instant messaging because she wanted to make homework more "fun." That plan did not work. She dramatically cut her homework time simply by turning the TV and computer off.

- "Try to LEARN while you do your homework." Cassie says that without the electronic distractions, she was able to think more clearly and learn information from her homework. "After a while, I found it easier to study for tests because I was not learning information the night before a test," she said. "I had taken the time to learn it while doing my homework."

- "Take advantage of your time in school." Cassie was surprised to discover how much time she was not using in school...when teachers have to take attendance, were troubleshooting the DVD/VCR, or when students caused distractions, etc. "Now, I do a LOT of my homework before I even get home," Cassie says.

** In Conclusion **

Multi-tasking is good for certain situations, but it does not work for learning. Your brain needs to focus in order to process and learn new information. When you "unplug" your distractions, you will get your homework done much faster, learn more while doing it, and ultimately increase your grades.

EXACTLY what I was NEEDED! This is no toy! There seems to be some negative
comments due to the Lag-Time between the time that you turn on the recorder,
and when it opens the tray: --- Patience, Grasshopper! --- this machine does so
much more!

IT'S A COMPUTER! Allow it to go through it's boot-up process, after which the
responses are just as fast as any other DVD Player It's a tool, you need to read
the manual throughly but once you understand the concept, it's very simple.
AT LAST! I can transfer my MASSIVE VHS Library! Unfortunately some had al-
ready begun to degrade. BACK & FORTH!!!! Far Out! VHS to DVD & Vice Versa!

Aside from the ability to handle the newest blank media (includ. RAM & DOUBLE
SIDED Disks) the best part is being able to record off my TV! It's every bit as easy
to record multiple 5 minute segments of a newsreel, or a 6 hour congressional
meeting at the touch of a button as it had been on my old VCR.

DivX is a compressed digital video format (like MP3) that's based on the MPEG-4 video compression standard. It can reduce the video from a DVD (MPEG-2) to around 10 percent of its original size while still retaining good video and audio quality, enabling you to store several two-hour length movies on burned DVD media.

HDMI is a lossless, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface to link any audio/video source (such as a set-top box, DVD player, or AV receiver) with your TV--all over a single cable. HDMI supports standard, enhanced or high definition video, plus multi-channel digital audio on a single cable. It supports all ATSC formats--standard (SDTV), enhanced (EDTV), and high (HDTV).

Despite some minor flaws, overall this is an extremely strong DVD recorder. It is fantastic for converting your VHS library into DVD. I've had no problems in nearly two years. It's too bad Panasonic & others have decided to pull the plug on hard drive DVD recorders in the North American market. This is a big mistake, do you hear me? Please bring the high-definition blu-ray machines over here soon (w/o shortcuts, must be Made in Japan please).

I am also quite impressed on how much these go for, even USED (especially since I bought mine well under the MSRP).

Easily 5-stars for the DMR-EH75V.

The salesman in the desert selling water has a distinct advantage over the multitude of used sand lot owners. With a product that is clearly in demand, we would expect water inventory to remain consistently low. Yet because of the landscape it is sometimes difficult to see the water company behind the sand dunes.

Every time a new product or service is launched these days, an internet marketing campaign is included. Then it seems like another three or four companies spring up online the next day offering practically the same thing. The abundance of choices also brings an abundance of information. In order for companies to compete, they must rise to the same standard.

So the entrepreneur asks these important questions:

1. Is it valuable for personal as well as business purposes?
2. Does it ever lose or gain value?
3. What is the consumer reaction?

There are direct marketing products that serve both the individual and business owner alike. Any product or service that affects its user on a financial level would fall into this category. A household budget shares the same goal as a business budget. People desire to prosper and businesses must.

Educational material also serves both the consumer and business owner. When a direct marketing professional has an educational system for sale, chances are they've already reaped the benefits it delivers. As the overall knowledge of man continues to escalate at unprecedented speed, the demand for specialized knowledge grows in all markets. The ability to deliver valuable information is a rewarding experience for everyone.

Looking specifically at financial and educational material, it is reasonable to suspect that time can have an effect on the value of that information. As the knowledge base increases, some or all of that information may be subject to change. This is especially true for specialized educational products. Tax laws seem to change every year, and investment advice has to remain constant. Knowledge on how to repair a VCR may be ancient, but technical training for disk players, or TV's for that matter, changes constantly.

If the product we purchase can't be upgraded or enhanced, it is like any other product that begins to depreciate. Having a lifetime warranty on an electronic device would definitely affect our decision to purchase. Likewise an educational product, or financial service that absorbs changes without adding expense to the user, satisfies the demand for true and lasting value.

Finally we have to know if it works. Catchy slogans and entertaining advertisements aside, people need to hear from other people what they can expect. All the scientific evidence in the world isn't going to convince me to buy some wonder tonic if my neighbor is telling me it gave him gas.

People trust people that aren't trying to sell them something. The individual giving the testimony doesn't gain a thing by convincing someone else to buy. TV has lost most of its credibility when it comes to parading 'supposed' consumers around with glowing, well scripted, endorsements; especially when the viewer can Google the product and read a dozen negative reviews in an instant.

Direct marketing products with value always have the endorsement of the marketing professional. Although this can seem like a car salesman claiming they own the same car, the value in the product can be measured apart for that endorsement. Even the addition of other consumers and business owners giving their reviews, only enhances the perceived value based on measurable criteria; namely, how it helps and why.

The internet market will continue to absorb any and every imaginable product people conceive. Rising to the top, the few truly valuable items will serve both the public lucky enough to find them, and the marketer clever enough to deliver them.

RV Camping With Kids is a Treat for All

For four months when my daughter Emily was a little tyke, she traveled with my wife and me for four months on a giant RV road trip across America. We traveled 17,000 marvelous miles in our 24-foot Tioga Class C motorhome, through 33 states, on a media tour sponsored by the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association. Our assignment: talk with newspaper and TV reporters about how great it was to camp with our child in an RV. And so we did, day after day, week after week, month after month in cities across America. It was, I must say, a dream assignment.

Our little home on wheels became very special to us during those wonderful months. It led us across Florida's Alligator Alley, and to North Carolina to the very spot where Orville and Wilbur Wright first flew a plane. It took us Franklin County, Missouri, where I stumbled upon the last corncob pipe factory in America, and to a funky cafe outside Little Rock, Ark., where Bill Clinton once ate burgers.

Our Tioga took us to Boston, where we spent a hot day alongside the Charles River, chatting with old friends who had stopped by while we waiting for the media to show up to point cameras at us and inquire about how great it was to travel with a child.

Emily was wide-eyed at everything she saw and experienced. She rode in her car seat at the dinette table, hour after hour, looking out the window until she was bored, at which time we'd pop a Barney video tape into our 12-volt VCR to keep her occupied for awhile. Each time we pulled to the side of the road, she glowed with excitement at what new adventure awaited her. What would she find, she must have wondered, when she stepped outside? An ocean beach? A forest? A cafe to eat fish and chips (her favorite meal)? Or perhaps yet another playground?

She played in a hundred playgrounds -- whether in campgrounds or city parks. The thought struck my wife and me more than once that we should name our tour, "Playgrounds Across America."

Emily gathered a basket-full of seashells on a Florida beach, and dipped her feet into the Suwannee River. In Maine, she at lobster, and near Indianapolis, chased fireflies by a cornfield. In tiny Millersville, Ohio, she celebrated the Fourth of July with the local population and her wide-eyed parents, who had never witnessed such small town patriotism. Perhaps Andy Griffith's fictitious town of Mayberry really does exist.

Also in Ohio, Emily caught her first fish, a four-inch perch. She dined on perch, too, with her Uncle George in Cleveland. She wasn't crazy, however, about the fried pickles in St. Louis, but she loved the strawberry waffle she shared with me in Orlando.

Camped on a cliff overlooking the Pacific, she marveled at the gray whales that passed outside our motorhome window. A thousand-plus miles away, she posed for a photo on the giant jackalope of South Dakota's Wall Drug. In Indiana, she and I dashed from the motorhome during a break in a violent lightning storm to snap our photos at the grave of wild West cowgirl Annie Oakley.

Many nights, we built a campfire, where we would roast marshmallows and talk about that day's adventures. Life, I suspect, does not get much better for a kid, or, I should add, for a dad!

Every night we tucked Emily into her own bed, which was familiar and safe to her no matter where we were camped. Today, that bed is still one of her favorite comfort zones.

My daughter, now a teenager, was too young to remember most of that trip, but I believe it will always be deep within her. Today, when summer arrives, she is still first in line to hop in the motorhome and head out the campground.

I had this dvd recorder now for about 3 yrs i think & i never had a problem yet as far as recording anyhting. That is recording dvd to vhs & vhs to dvd it works well actually great. Any movie that i burn from my computer the dvd player always plays it. When useing the dvd recorder especially when its vhs to dvd you must finalize it in order to get the disc to play in any other dvd player. As far as the options that i use from this dvd recoreder it has it works awesome & im completely happy with this product. The only reason i didn't give 5 stars cause i haven use every option yet. When i 1st got it i call customer service they were great they showed me the 1 touch quick operation as far as recording & i never had a problem since then

I'm not sure why a previous reviewer had so much trouble, but I found that recording from DVD to VHS was not difficult at all. It does require a few steps to make sure you have the settings you want but you shouldn't have to change them after that unless you change you mind about how to record things. The one thing you probably do need to do every times besides hitting dub is to pick the recording quality which effects the amount of time you DVD can record for, but that can be done with one button on the remote very quickly.

Recording from the TV was trivially easy- like recording to a VCR.

Recording from a video camera (not using fireware- the old fashioned way) was not difficult, though it required a manual consult to figure out how to change the DVD input channel.

My main complaint is sometimes it's not intuitive which menus and button functions will only work in certain modes. For example, you can't change the DVD recording quality in VHS mode (I understand that makes some sense, but in an interface a one-use button shouldn't really change behavior, only multi-function buttons). Also, you can only pull up the menu to manually finalize the disc if you start playing the movie, it doesn't work if you have it in the title screen. This seems like sloppy user interface testing.

Still, if you want to dub VHS to DVD or record tv to DVD I would definitely say this will do the job. The DIVX capabalities are also a big plus in my book.

Simple, easy, nice unit by Sony. Having many video tapes that needed to be transferred, I tried my computer but it was cumbersome to do the transfers. This allows easy transfer to DVD using any format including DVD-RW for recording tv shows. My only complaint is the unit does not allow you to name your DVD so when you pop in into your computer, it comes up with the stock Sony name. Minor complaint because you can still edit and name the video via the unit on screen so when it sees a DVD player, you know what is on the DVD. Let's hope the prices keep coming down!

Home Theater Budget Guide, What to Expect

When you hear the term home theater, you probably think of big screens, big cushiony chairs, big speakers everywhere, projectors, and lots of remote controls sitting around your living room. Football games, beer, and other fun stuff probably sneaks into that image as well. If you've read any of my previous articles, then you know that home theater is truly for everyone, every budget and every space. It's not just about the gear, DVD players, MP3 players, Blu-Ray, surround systems, plasma and LCD screens. It's about making your system, whatever it is, the best it can possibly be.

Unlike home theaters of previous decades, you too can get into the act, and you're lucky enough to have a broad range of projectors, screens, displays, seating, and equipment, even popcorn machines, available to create your own home theater. Probably the first big decision you have to make is where you want to put your home theater. It's one thing to figure out where to put your 19-inch TV set, but trying to fit a big screen TV with six (or more) speakers and associated A/V gear into your home is a little different.

Few people are prepared for how overpowering a full home theater setup can be in a small home, so it's especially important to plan if you have limited space. Define your home theater space as the all-important first step. If the only place to put a TV is on the mantle above the fireplace, you're looking at a flat-panel(plasma or LCD) TV and not much else. If you have to fit the whole system into the corner of the living room, that narrows the search as well.

You can most certainly put a home theater in your present living room, your bedroom, or a room devoted to your theater. Components nowadays are doing a pretty good job at integrating different systems together. You can find really good DVD/VCR combos, receivers that can control your video and audio signals. Personal video recorders are now a part of many digital cable and satellite set-top boxes. The important thing you should remember is that it's not so much the size of a room, but the way you establish the room's ability to absorb you into its sound and video experience. Remember, don't rush out and buy a home theater that just won't fit into your home or lifestyle. A home theater is all about creating a theatrical atmosphere, so choose your spaces and work from there.

So now you're probably thinking that this all sounds great, and you're eager to dive into home theater, but just how much is all of this going to cost? Well, the short answer is, of course, how much do you want to spend? Here's a quick guide that will help you figure it out. (Keep in mind that pricing is competitive and changes all the time. Just two years ago, a lot of this gear cost twice as much as it does now. Do your homework and research a few different stores and websites to find out who has the best deal on the same merchandise. Don't forget eBay and Amazon!.

If your budget is $0 to $500, don't worry. You're still in the entry-level stage for home theater. Systems in the under-$500 range will probably use your existing TV (or include an inexpensive flat-panel TV in the 27 inch range) and an entry-level all in one home theater system package including all the speakers you need for surround sound, and a receiver/DVD player combo). Yo can probably throw in a $50 VCR if you really had to have one, (maybe it's time to upgrade some of those worn-out VHS tapes as well,) but even the lowest level all-in-one home theater sets include DVD players.

If your budget is between $500 and $2,000, you can go up a range in a number of the components. You can spend some of this money on a midsized flat-panel TV (perhaps in the 37- to 42-inch range), though with the way flat-panel prices are dropping, you may be able to get a 50-inch or larger LCD TV, while leaving money in your budget for audio equipment. You have some room to play, so decide if you want to spend more on the video, sound, or if you want a nice balance of both. This price range has a range of options for better surround-sound systems which will include five surround speakers plus a subwoofer. You can also buy a fairly good A/V receiver to drive the system. Top it all off with an MP3 player and maybe even a bluetooth option, which will allow you to stream music and video directly from your PC or portable device wirelessly.

At the $2,000 to $5,000 level, you start to create serious options for a very impressive home theater system. You can get a high quality 50-inch or bigger 1080p high-resolution LCD or Plasma TV, or perhaps even a home theater projector and screen. You'll definitely want to make the move from DVD to Blu-ray if you're spending this kind of money, since Blu-ray is the highest quality DVD available and a good player is around $300. For your audio, you can spend $1,000 or so on a nice all-in-one system, but at this price you can also start to get serious with separate components with a very good A/V receiver, DVD/CD player/ recorder, personal video recorder, gaming system, surround-sound speakers, and potentially even more. Don't forget, if you're not familiar with some of these components, or aren't quite comfortable setting up a system yourself, get someone knowledgeable about it to help you. Otherwise you could find yourself with components that might not be compatible with one another, or you'll wind up spending more money on the devices, converters and interfaces to make sure that they will.

When you top $5,000 as your budget, you can start expanding in some wonderful ways by adding more throughout the house through multizone capabilities, whole-home audio, and universal remote-control capability. You can even continue to go up the ladder in terms of higher-quality components. Good projectors start around $1,500, or you can stick with flat-panel LCD displays. In this budget you can go 60- inch or more, or even multiple displays for different rooms. Don't forget about the furniture! Good home theater seats start around $350 each. A high-quality universal remote control costs about $500. (And by "universal" I mean one that will do everything but run the shower. It will control your displays, all of them, all your sound, lights, even close the blinds so you won't have any glare on the screen, in every room.)

I hope that wasn't too much information overload. Just don't forget, you can always start with a lower budget and upgrade later when you have a better idea exactly what you want and need as part of your Home Theater Experience.

Asus Eee PC 1000H Netbook

The Asus Eee PC started it all. As of this writing, there are over a dozen and a half EEE PC models ranging from 7" to 10" screens and in various eye-catching colors. The Asus EEE PC 1000H is one of the best selling models for Asus. For almost a full year, Asus was the king of netbooks until everybody else caught up.

The Asus Eee PC 1000H is their top model but it is heavier than the Samsung NC10 due to its larger battery capacity. This netbook has a battery life of up to 7 hours and a keyboard that is roughly 92% of a standard full-sized laptop keyboard but unfortunately it has a poor layout.

There are two operating systems currently available: Windows XP & Xandros Linux. Additionally, it is larger in dimensions than other 10 inch netbooks - a slight negative considering these netbooks should be minimal in size and weight for portability.

Acer Aspire One Netbook

The Acer Aspire One is probably one of the more affordable netbook in the market today due to a recent price cut. This would make a great family laptop used by teenagers who just want to surf the web, check emails, do their homework, listen to music, and watch YouTube videos. It is also great for commuting in public transportation or long trips to college or visiting friends. It also makes a great second or travel 'laptop' for business users. Because of its global distribution network, the Acer Aspire One is the best selling netbook in the world.

The Acer Aspire One has a battery life of up to 5.5 hours and a keyboard that is roughly 89% of a standard full-sized laptop keyboard. Two operating systems are currently available: Windows XP & Linpus Linux. There are five colors available for everyone including the most popular Rose Pink for the female demographic and Sapphire Blue for the male demographic.

If low price is what you're after, then the Acer Aspire One is the netbook of choice. It's not as sophisticated but it offers good value though not battery life.

Home Theater Room Design - Where Do I Start?

Once we decide we want a home theater design for our very own - what then? Do we have room for it in the basement, or in a spare room? Will our electricity have the power to handle it? Most professional designers will tell us that the design of our home theater system has to meet specific requirements in order to place it inside our home. For example, our theater system set-up must fit with the size and shape within our home, with the sound likely to be off if this is not done correctly - causing it to be less than the high quality sound system we originally purchased. I set this unit up with a Philips PH 61159 modulator. In other words I hooked up the two units to an old TV that only has a 75 ohm F connector on the back. This allowes both a roof antenna and this combo unit to be connected to an older TV doesn't have RCA inputs. This arrangement worked great until the HD switchover. Now I'm going to add an HD converter box until it's time to buy a new television. For playing movies from VHS tapes and DVDs this unit works great. This unit has been light use since December 2008. Which one is it? The box, in which the DVD came in, says that the disc is Region Free, which would mean that it is meant for Region 0 or All Region. Doesn't it mean that the DVD will play anywhere in the world? Well, good news is, that there is nothing wrong with your DVD player or the DVD disc. The bad news id that you are experiencing the wonderful world of DVD Region Coding or Region Locking as sometimes termed as. Are you asking me, what is DVD Region Coding and why it is needed?

A Region Free, Region Free, Region Zero or All Region disc is supposed to play on any Region Locked player, but there is that question of compatibility between PAL and NTSC video formats. For example, suppose you got a Region Free DVD from UK and try to play it in a US NTSC player. The DVD will not play, since the disc is in PAL video format. There is a misconception that since the DVD is based on digital format, it matters less if your player plays NTSC or PAL. All digital video formats are based on either PAL or NTSC video systems.

But what are PAL and NTSC video systems? Let me briefly explain.

Countries all over the world use one of the three main TV broadcast standards. These three standards are - PAL NTSC and SECAM. But these three standards are incomplete with the other. Take for example the Region Free DVD, which you purchased in UK. It did not play correctly on a US NTSC DVD player because the DVD is in PAL video format. That misconception that I mentioned somewhere in my discussion above, does not hold good and as I said, all digital video formats, including DVD are still based on the PAL or NTSC video systems.

Let me briefly outline PAL and NTSC systems for a better understanding.

The first ever colour broadcast came to USA in 1953. This was based on NTSC - National Television System Committee standard. NTSC is being used by many countries in the American continent and as well as in Asia too, in countries including Japan. NTSC runs on 525 lines/frame.

Phase Alternating Line (PAL) system was introduced in early 1960s and was available in most European countries except France. PAL utilises a wider chanel-bandwidth than NTSC, which provides a better picture quality. This system runs on 625 lines/frame.

Sequential Couleur Avec Memoire or Sequential Colour with Memory (SECAM) standard was introduced in early 1960s and was implemented in France. SECAM transmits colour information sequentially but uses the same bandwidth as PAL. The standard runs on 625 lines/frame.

Similar to multi-system VCRs, DVD players will not convert video standards. A PAL standard DVD player will not accept a DVD disc formatted in SECAM.

There is a point to consider to end your despair. If you have a multi-system TV, which is able to receive both PAL and NTSC video signals, you can very well watch that DVD you got from UK. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has taken a serious view to this coding and warned that such coding may violate the Trade Practices Act. A similar ruling has been done by the government of New Zealand. Therefore in practice, the DVD players sold in their countries have to be of Region 0. The Region 0 DVD players are required to incorporate Region 1 to 6 simultaneously, there-by providing the capability to plat any disc, no matter what region it belongs to.

I couldn't be happier with this Magnavox DVD VCR Combo with Digital Tuner. I wanted a VCR/DVD with a tuner as like to record using an old fasion atenna. I just can't bring myself to pay for something that I can get for free. It works great both the VCR and the DVD and it's easy to use and has plenty of In and Out connections to hook-up to my other video and sound equipment. The only problem that I had was getting my universal remote to work on it (Couldn't find codes to program the remote) but, was able to program the remote doing the channel up thing until it worked for both the VCR and DVD mode. I've put it through much use and abuse and it has held up perfectly.

How do you need to handle glass, fragile and electronic items?

How to pack your dishes?

2. Before placing any dishes, simply fold a sheet of bubblewrap (thicker bubblewrap) to create a double level of bubblewrap at the bottom of the box to soften the base so to enhance protection of the items.

3. Start with the dish plates. Usually, you can form two vertical rows of dish plates one next to the other. Beware! Do not put them one of top each other. This is a common mistake, people usually stack them one on top of each other, and this will create too much pressure that the probability of breakage is higher. This is why it is very important to position them vertically one next to each other.

4. All the glass dishes must be double wrapped by white newsprint paper. If one of the glass items should break during the move, the broken item will stay trapped in the paper and avoid spreading all over the box. By the time of the unpacking, you will not be injured or cut with the broken pieces. Some people choose to save money and use old newspaper to wrap dishes. This is a very big mistake because the newspaper ink can run out and stain the dishes. If you still want to save money on white newsprint paper, make sure to use white newsprint paper to wrap your dishes for the first wrap (the one that are closer to the dish) and you can simply use the normal daily newspaper for the second wrap.

5. After completing the first level of plate's dishes, please place another sheet of folding bubblewrap in order to create a new level. It doesn't have to be even but it needs to be used as a soft divider for the second level.

6. The second level: Now it's the time to put the thicker drinking glass or the coffee and tea mugs. Make sure to double wrap them the white newspaper. You can place them in the box horizontally since they are strong enough to withhold the pressure.

7. After completion of the second level, please place another sheet of folding bubblewrap in order to create a new level. At the third level, you can place all the wine glasses or thinner fragile glasses and porcelain. All items on the third level are fragile and need to be handled carefully. Regarding the wineglasses, we recommend to triple wrap them for added protection. Place them in the box horizontally. Do not fill the box all the way to the top. Use some white newsprint, form paper balls, and place them equally all on top of the box and between dishes so to keep every item in the box secured during transportation. This is the way to pack those kind of dishes and other dishes, such as vase, glass salad bowls, and even statues, use another box and simply surround the glass item with lots of bubblewrap (use the thicker bubblewrap to increase protection). In all cases, please make sure the box is not too heavy so it won't break from the bottom!!!

The first installment of the Microsoft Movie Maker that was introduced along with the Windows Me received flak from critics due to its unassuming features as compared to the IMovie product on the Apple Macintosh.

A year later Version 1.1 was included in Windows XP, which supported the creation of DV AVI and WMV 8 files. November 2002 saw the release of the new and improved Version 2.0. Later, the Windows XP Service Pack 2 included the rather inferior updated Version 2.1.A new version of Microsoft 2.5, was introduced by Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 with greater provisions for DVD burning. Some versions of Windows "Longhorn" (now known as Windows Vista) included a WPF version, but was later done away with in the development reorganization.

Vista and the Movie Maker

The Windows has been upgraded to version 6 to equate it with the upgraded operating system-Windows Vista. It is, however, referred to as version 3.0 by the SDK. Except for Windows Vista Starter, it is included in all editions. The Home Premium and Ultimate editions of Windows Vista includes a high-definition updated version of the Microsoft.

Score new effects, a few innovative transitions, and a DVR-MS supported file format are included in the Windows Vista Version. Windows Media Center uses this format to record television. HDV camcorders are supported by the HD version in Premium and Ultimate editions of Windows Vista. DVR-MS type files are created from HDV tapes by the Capture Wizard. However, this new version of Windows Movie Maker no longer allows video-imports from an analog source such as a VCR or a webcam.

A pixel shader hardware support is required by all Windows Vista versions. This new versions might not be supported by some systems. Microsoft has solved this issue by releasing an updated version of the older 2.6 for Windows Vista on the Microsoft Download Center. This version therefore allows the use of Windows not only on Vista but also on systems where the Windows Vista version cannot be run.

Windows Movie Maker 2.1, is a totally different ball game altogether offering options to create, customize and share home movies on your computer. You can fine tune your own movie, editing the poor shots and incorporating the best ones only. The movie can subsequently be shared through the desired medium. You can transfer your potential Oscar-winning film on to a DVD using other applications. There are also software available that allow you to transfer your movie back to videotape in your camera to facilitate playback on television or in the camera. Movie Maker 2.1 also offers great state of the art special effects, music and narrative techniques that are flexible and add that extra edge to your movie.

Have You Ever Had a Battery Leak in a TV-VCR Remote?

A battery leak in a flashlight is not too bad. You simply clean the contacts and all is well, but a battery leak in an electronic device usually spells doom for the device. The fluid that comes out of the battery is corrosive and will normally cause damage to the sensitive circuitry in an electronic device.

There is hope! Did you know that most battery company's actually Guarantee that their battery will not leak and damage your electronic device? The next time you buy a set of batteries, look on the package for a guarantee. If it does not have a guarantee, I would stay away from those batteries.

NOTE: I have only seen this type of guarantee on standard size Alkaline batteries: AAA, AA, C, D, and a few watch batteries. I'm not sure if re-chargeable batteries leak and I'm not sure if they offer this type of guarantee.

When batteries leak, if the item is not that expensive, most people will simply throw the item away and buy a new item, but what about bigger ticket items like a digital camera? Battery leaks are not covered by the camera warranty, and having someone clean the battery leak could void your camera warranty. This is the where battery guarantees come into play.

For example, I had an $80 dive light in which the batteries leaked. I thought this was really strange because I changed the batteries weekly. TIP: Never go night diving with old batteries. I sent the dive light to the battery company and I received a new light (newer model) and new batteries.

Example two, my friend had an old camera winder which was damaged by leaking batteries. We sent the winder to the company and in a few weeks the battery company sent a check to buy a new winder and of course new batteries.

The obvious drawback to the guarantee is you have to pay to ship your item to the company, and you will be without the item for a while (4-6 weeks). Also, it is the company's discretion to repair or replace the item. For me, it's a hassle to send the item to the battery company if a replacement can be purchased for less than $20.

Do's and Don'ts:
1. Do make sure the battery company offers a guarantee on their batteries and read the terms of the guarantee.
1. Don't mix and match batteries? This will increase your chances of experiencing a leak and this will void the guarantee.
2. Don't leave batteries in electronic devices for extended periods of time.
3. Don't expose electronic devices to excessive heat, as heat will cause a leak and possibly worse, an explosion.

Whenever possible, buy rechargeable batteries. They can be used over and over again, but they need to be used, and over time they will begin to lose their ability to hold a charge. Don't expect a rechargeable battery to hold a charge after sitting in your desk drawer for two months. You will be able to recharge the battery, but the charge will not last as long.

Don't throw that thing away just because the batteries leaked in it! Check if the battery company has a guarantee!

Capture Video Into Your Computer

You've shot that wonderful video of your daughter's birthday. Now, how can you get it into the computer to do some snazzy editing and perhaps produce a VCD or two? If the video is on that MiniDV or Hi8 tape, how can you possibly move it out of there into the computer? Seems tough. Well, let this article help you.

Analog or Digital?

The first thing you want to do is to determine if your video is in digital format (MiniDV, Digital8, MicroMV, Digital Tapeless, DVD) or analog format (8mm, Hi8, VHS-C). If it is in digital format, which is increasingly popular these days, you will need to transfer the video to the computer using a Firewire card. If it is in analog format, you will need an analog-to-digital conversion device to do the transfer.

Firewire Cards

A Firewire card is the channel through which video from your digital camcorder can enter your computer. A Firewire cable runs from your camcorder DV output port to your computer's DV input port. Due to the extremely fast transfer speeds that Firewire achieves, the digital video will be transferred with almost zero loss in quality. Most computers do not come with Firewire cards - if you are lo
ing for one, I'd highly recommend the Belkin FireWire card which retails for less than $35 online.

An analog-to-digital conversion device converts video from analog format to digital format. These type of device is well suited for the following video editing scenarios:

Standard TV from the days of black and white to the present color images we watch every day on television are made up of a series of still images displayed at 60 frames a second in the US and 50 frames a second in Europe. These still images consist of individual lines of information that move from left to right across the screen followed by more lines moving down the screen. With a Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) that most older TVs' use for the display, the flat surface that you look at is coated on the inside with phosphor dots or rectangles. A beam of electrons is aimed at the dots or rectangles causing them to glow. With a standard definition TV there are 480 of these lines and 640 sets of dots or rectangles on each line. Each set of dots or rectangles consist of three color dots (Red Blue and Green) and the power or intensity of the electron beam determines how bright each color will be. There are actually three beams moving together across the face of the screen, each changing in intensity as they cross the phosphor dots or rectangles.

Interlaced (i) or Progressive (p)?

In order to reduce the bandwidth, normal TV signals only send 30/25 frames a second to the receiver made up of only 240 lines of information. If that were all we saw on the screen it would look like the old flickering movies. Within the TV set the signal is processed and sent twice to the CRT, the odd numbered lines are scanned and then the even numbered lines are scanned with the same image. This is referred to as an interlaced image and eliminates the flicker. However the true vertical resolution is only 240.

With a progressive image, 60/50 frames a second are sent to the receiver and all of the lines are scanned once for each frame and providing twice the detail as the interlaced image with the same screen. However this requires twice the bandwidth. Keep in mind that non-digital over the air is only 240 lines of original information, you can use a line doubler or scaler to increase the number of lines, but it will never be as sharp as the original image.

Horizontal resolution is much simpler, it is basically just the number of dots, rectangles or pixels across the width of your screen. For example standard definition TV is 640 X 480, the horizontal resolution is 640 for both interlaced and progressive.

Standard Definition DVD Full Screen and Wide screen

With the introduction of DVDs' the horizontal resolution was increased from 640 to 720 to show the wider images of the original movies. Displays with a resolution of "720 X 480 " could show these movies using the full screen width, however when viewing standard TV images, the people are slightly fatter.

Enhanced Definition TV

This format uses progressive scan and an even wider image for "854 X 480" and though is much better than standard TV it still does not come close to High Definition TV. Standard TV usually have a black bar on each side as the people would look weird being so fat.

720p High Definition TV

This format was a big step forward, however when viewing regular TV, you were still stuck back in the old format of "640 X 480". 720P displays have a resolution of "1280 x 720" and use progressive scan for a very sharp image. Scalers and converters are used to boost the quality of the TV images to match the screen. For Analog signals, Component video equipment and cables are a minimum requirement. Video and S-Video will not work. The TV set may accept Video and S-Video, but will not take advantage of the full resolution, displaying a smaller image or through processing in the TV provide a larger image though not as sharp.

The Government steps in with 720p and 1080i high Definition TV Standards

On February 17, 2009, television stations will stop all analog broadcasts and only broadcast digitally. Older analog TVs will require converter boxes to receive over the air programming. Cable or satellite service will not be affected. There are two formats that will be used by the different stations.

The 720p format makes a picture with 720 vertical lines, each with 1280 pixels horizontally or a resolution of "1280 x 720". 720p uses progressive scanning, like computers, which sends a complete picture 60 times per second. 720p provides the smoothest possible motion rendition, but it does not have as much resolution as 1080i.

The 1080i format makes a picture with 1080 vertical lines, each with 1920 pixels horizontally or a resolution of "1920 x 1080". 1080i uses interlaced scanning, like traditional TV, which alternates sending odd lines and even lines and thus sends a complete picture 30 times per second. 1080i provides the highest possible resolution, but has the same motion rendition as traditional TV.

1080p High Definition DVD

Your next DVD player will most likely be able to play 50 Gbyte DVD's that will use an High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) that will also supply up to 7 channels of high definition audio along with the 1080p image. This is quickly becoming the standard for DVD movies in the same way that DVD replaced VCR tapes a few years ago.

To view these movies you will need an HDTV display with HDMI inputs and a DVD player capable of playing the new format with HDMI output. You will also need special HDMI cables to connect the two. Your cable or satellite provider will also use HDMI connections so you will need at least two HDMI connectors on your display device.

There are some drawbacks to the current models of High Definition DVD players. High- bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP), creates a slow down when starting a movie, you may think that you have a problem with your DVD. The player is just talking to the display device to make sure that they are both licenced properly. Unless you are viewing the DVD on a 42 inch or larger screen you will have a hard time telling the difference between 720p and 1080p.

Broadband what does it mean?

You may be using broadband now and not even realize it. How often do you select an online movie from your local cable or dish company? Have you noticed how many high definition features are now being offered? As the selections become larger, watching streaming content will become so common that we will slowly forget about our DVD players. 720p is very common and soon 1080p will also be available. The protection for the movie producers is already there as the high definition boxes use HDMI with HDCP for the high definition outputs.

Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) TV's

Then comes the OLED's, we are already using them on the new cell phones and laptops. The first OLED television was introduced in 2008. As demand for larger displays increases and the pipeline that is now full of plasma and LCD screen began to empty we will hear more and more about the color quality of the OLED's. For a few years the resolution of the displays will remain about the same and the sales pitch will be all about the colors. But keep in mind that there is no limit the size of the screen with OLED and it is also flexible. The flexibly will allow for easer handling and installation.

As the size of the screen increases a demand for greater resolution will start all over again. And with the flexibly comes the possibility of 360 degree wrap-a-round screens. Remember that the horizontal resolution is much easer obtain than the vertical so a resolution of 16000(or greater) X 1080p is not out of the question. 360 degree movies are not new, Disney World has had one in operation in Orlando for years. You stand in the center in a large group and turn around to follow the action. A few spinning recliners and the screen raised a few feet and away you go.

What a wonderful age of technology we live in. You can buy the greatest gadgets now days to record video and music and play them in all sorts of ways on other great technology gadgets from computers, DVD's, MP3 players, VCR's, and many more. It is all great stuff. But they all come with thick owners manuals that do not always get you going the right direction. You may eventually learn to use your great new camera for instance, but that does not mean you will necessarily take pictures that are worth looking at down the road. Rolling tape in your camera is one thing and creating video that is high quality and interesting is another thing. The goal of this product is to bring you up to speed with using your video camera (whatever format, and whatever brand) to get the best results for recording those precious moments of your kid's athletic achievements.

We as parents spend plenty of hours out on the field, court, pool, or track watching our kids take part in and compete in youth sports. If you have a video camera you are going to want to record some of these events for posterity and perhaps education. Following the simple steps in this guide will help you to capture them in the best possible fashion so that it is watch able but also usable down the road.

My video expertise stems from two decades as a network television cameraman and as a parent with several kids actively involved in youth sports. In my years of shooting video professionally I have been around the world and seen just about every type of news event. I also spent 15 years covering pro sports events for my employer. These were the best type of assignments as far as I was concerned. In my entire career the things I have enjoyed most is being able to go to places where the average person cannot. In sports that usually means being on the field, next to the court, in the press box, or in the pit. I have shot football games of all levels up to and including NFC and AFC championship games. Living in the Bay Area has allowed me to cover many baseball pennant races and several World Series. I was right behind home plate the night the earth shook in the 1989 World Series. Talk about a shock. I had to give up covering a World Series between the two Bay Area teams to go and cover a huge news event. Baseball seemed small for a while after the magnitude of the earthquake. The point in this is that I love sports, have been around sports my whole life and I know how to shoot video of sports. With that in mind I will do my best to give you advice on how to do the same.

Gear

Now whether you have the latest DV camera in your hands or an old VHS format camera there are basic things you will need to keep in mind if you are going to shoot sports. As we say in the video business your camera is only as good as the glass that you hang in front of it. The better the lens the better the results will be no matter what kind of recording format you use. Now you already have a camera in hand and may never have heard this particular bit of advice so it is too late to factor it into the equation. However if you have camera in hand and it has any limitations on what it can do due to the lens being less than wonderful there are things you can do to mitigate the situation. We will discuss those things in more detail later on.

The key factors before setting out on your game day video assignment are to make sure you know the operating functions of the gear, have a tape supply in hand (soon to be DVDs with the revolution in gear design that is taking place right now), and batteries fully charged. I know these may seem like the simply obvious things but even the pros have to constantly remind themselves to check and double check these items.

A little aside here about preparation. Over the many years of covering news I learned lots of little tips from other photographers in the field and applied them to my work regimen. In the early days of video we always had to carry around a portable hair dryer because the record decks would seize up if the moisture levels got to high. So in the winter time if you came in from the cold outside into a nice warm building the air would condense inside the machine and cause moisture build up. The warning light would come on and bang we were dead in the water. One of us would have to run to the car and get the hair dryer, fire it up and chase the water away from the record heads of the deck. It caused some very funny moments in public places I can assure you. (This by the way can still be a problem even today with electronics/VCRs/lenses. Too much moisture can cause havoc. So just remember a portable hair dryer can save your day)

Another thing I learned from others is the value of backup. A few years ago I was out on assignment and we had a young eager college intern along with us in the field. This young man wanted to learn all about what we did in our job. He was very interested in how to take pictures, unlike most of our interns who only wanted to become reporters or anchors. He asked many questions and after seeing that he was really paying attention I decided to take him under my wing and really fill him up with information. One tidbit that I shared with him was to always have an emergency stash of tape in his car when out on assignment. He didn't quite understand the importance of this at first since I had already drilled him about always bringing tape stock with him when going out on assignment. I filled him with stories of times when something or other happened and I'll be darned if you didn't need another tape and there under the seat of the car was that emergency spare. So anyway he went off to graduate from college and get a job in a small market TV station. He would send us progress reports from time to time, which I really enjoyed. Then lo and behold one day he sends me a letter telling me how he got into a jam one day on a story and needed that emergency tape. He had dutifully tucked one under the back seat and it was there to save the day. I hope that what you learn in this book will in some way keep you from having a video failure down the road. What I learned in my career is that video production is 80% of it is dealing with the curves and problems that are thrown at you and 20% talent. If you can learn to trouble shoot then you will always be successful.

My first suggestion for shooting your kids sports activities is to go watch TV. Yes sit down put your feet up and watch some sports on TV. Really watch how they make it interesting at the top level. Then watch the news and see how they cover the games from a news perspective. Don't pay attention to the content; just watch how it develops visually. Now of course you can never duplicate what the networks are doing with just your one camera. However if you can glean anything from watching it should be how they try to bring intimacy with the athletes out in the broadcast. All the new improvements in covering sports have to do with getting you the viewer as close to the athlete as they can. Bring you into their world. From cameras on wires overhead that swoop along the field to cameras in the net of a hockey game to cameras inside the cars at Daytona, it brings you into the game. Now you cannot stand on the pitchers mound at your kids' baseball game but you can learn some techniques that can make your baseball video more intimate and therefore more compelling to watch.

A side note here, if your task is to capture the whole game or sporting activity for review as a coaching tool you should focus mainly on getting a good high view and putting the camera on a tripod. Pan slowly to follow action and don't zoom in and out. My main goal here is not to teach you this skill since it is pretty darn basic. However if this is what you are doing you should do it right. Find the right framing to keep as much of the activity in the frame and follow it carefully. Some sports move quickly from one end to the other and you will have to be smooth. Resist the temptation to follow the ball on full zoom. You will lose. Those guys that shoot sports on TV are full on pros using much better gear than you will ever have at your disposal.

Now in order to get a good video of your child's game you need to find that emotion and excitement that exists in any game. Think of it as capturing a few of the things that occur and making those golden. Does the team do a pre game cheer? Get up close, stick your camera wither way up high over their heads looking down or get underneath looking up and shoot it in a way that takes the viewer where they can't go. Capture an at bat in baseball by taking a full pitch cycle in close-up of the pitcher, and then one of the catcher and then as close as you can of the hitter. Show their face if you can. If they get the big hit don't go crazy rushing to zoom out. Follow the runner down the line. It will be almost impossible to follow the ball so stay with the runner. Look for the angles that will give you these emotional shots.

Some sports are more of a challenge due to the size of the field and the amount of movement up and down the field. Take soccer of instance, if you follow the ball the camera is moving all over the place and the viewer gets queasy. To capture some good video of your kid playing you need to focus on specific shots and not try to follow the play. Look for moments such as throw ins, free kicks, kick offs when things are predictable and you can get closer to the action. Walk down the sideline and wait for the action to come to you. If you child is playing right forward then get ahead of the play and when you see the ball moving towards you then you can find you child and roll tape in anticipation of them playing the ball. Be sure to get some shots of the crowd cheering, the coach watching (not yelling I hope) the goalie waiting in anticipation.

Hold your shots steady for 6-10 seconds at a time. If you are taking a shot of someone watching the game actually count it out in your head (thousand one thousand two...) This will ensure that you get good solid shots and that you don't run on and on with the shot. Brace your arm against your chest for stability and use your other arm across your belly underneath to create a stabilizing platform. This is in lieu of a tripod of course. If you have a tripod it can always be a good thing to use if it does not get in the way.

Use creative angles as much as possible. Get down low and wait for the action to run by you. Don't pan with it but rather let the action race through the frame. At a swim meet get the camera down on the deck for more of a swimmers perspective of the action. Of course you may not want to stay there when the swimmers approach for a turn. Digital electronics do not like water inside them. I was getting the most awesome low angle shots of some open water ocean swimmers one time and the boat lurched on me and salt water sprayed over the camera. I had a cover on the camera but salt water seeped into the crannies and it caused us much grief getting it cleaned out so as to avoid damaging the electronics of the camera.

Blu-Ray Disc Player: Excellent picture quality on Blu-ray and DVD; DVD upconversion up to 1080p; HDMI output. Right off the bat everyone in the room noticed the image quality from the Blu-Ray Disc Player S300, it's always comforting when the results right out of the box are at least on par with expectations, surpassing them is of course a nice bonus.

The SONY BDP-S300 Blu-Ray Disc Player is an important product, giving Blu-ray some much needed traction in the affordable player category. Combine that with recent news from rental powerhouse Blockbuster that it is expanding Blu-ray titles in its stores (at the expense of HD DVD in most cases), and the BDP-S300 looks like a no-brainer.

HQV Benchmark Results: The BDP-S300 Blu-Ray Disc Player scored very well with the standard definition HQV benchmark disc, it passed most of the tests with flying colors and was able to lock onto the 3:2 film cadence test faster than many other of the DVD and BD/HD players tested recently.

Unlike Sony's first-gen BDP-S1 (and Pioneer Elite's BDP-HD1) the BDP-S300 will play back CDs, either from its analog audio outputs or any of its digital audio outputs, including HDMI.

Once loaded and running, the BDP-S300 performed like a gold medalist. The best Blu-ray Discs looked sensational at either 1080p/60 or 1080p/24. And for those using 720p displays, or displays that will not accept 1080p inputs, the player also performed beautifully when set for either a 720p or 1080i output.

Summary: I bought this Blu-Ray player last July to watch movies and it has worked flawlessly for me from day 1. I am not a viewer who will use picture in picture (which this does not have) nor do I play any of the games which are on some of the discs. I wanted a Blu-Ray player which gives me full HD video and great sound. The audio sounds great on my surround sound system when I use it. Sometimes I just use the TV speakers and the audio is excellent. If you are interested in a Blu-Ray player with outstanding video and excellent sound this player is for you.

Strengths: Plays Blu-Ray Discs, upconverts standard DVDs. Full 1080p output. Good array of audio outputs.

Strengths: Great picture when playing Blu ray Disk. Connected all audio connections at once except Coax, and all worked automatically...Great sound.

While the Sony BDP-S300 is an entry level Blu-ray player, entry level doesn't necessarily mean cheap. You're getting a capable high definition video player. VD's is lackluster at best and it only decodes Dolby Digital Plus. If you already have a capable upconverting DVD player and don't care about the decoding of Dolby TrueHD and the myriad of high definition DTS formats, this may be the Blu-ray player for you.

Summary: Sony has finally come out their second generation Blu-ray player at half the original price of the original! The BDP-S300 looks like a bargain compared to their previous BDP-S1 model.

Besides the cost benefit, you get more with this player. Unlike the previous model the S300 can play CDs in addition to DVDs. In addition, it seems to load slightly faster than the previous model.

All in all, the BDP-S300 delivers what it promises.

The new BDP-S300 model can output 1920 x 1080p (progressive) high-definition video, currently the highest resolution high-definition signal available through an HDMI(TM) connection. The player supports various video formats, including MPEG2, MPEG4-AVC and VC1.

For those who own an HDTV set without HDMI, an analog component output for 1080i (interlaced) is available as well.

The new BD player is compatible with most standard DVDs and has the added feature of 1080p upscaling through HDMI to 1080p capable HDTVs, improving the picture performance of existing DVD libraries.

Watching PIRATES I and PIRATES II I found the picture striking and vivid with no artifacts. My receiver is a delivers 5.1 DD so I am unable to take advantage of the uncompressed PCM codec. However, the Dolby digital audio track was quite impressive. All things considered, this an excellent player at a very good price.

This is an excellent BD Player for under $500! The picture quality is awesome!
Excellent upscaler quality for DVD movies

Below is mentioned that it can't be made region free. Only partially true. A California company already sells this model in a Multiregion (multi-region) version. It can play any Region A and B Blu-Ray Disc movie and display it on any TV that has HDMI input, regardless of video standard (PAL-SECAM-NTSC etc.)

This is a unit that we would buy for ourselves if it weren't for the fact that we couldn't make it region free, because we have a huge DVD collection with movies from regions 1 and 4. If you are going to play only region-free ("region 0") or region 1 discs then this unit is a great pick, especially because its cost/benefit ratio: great price and excellent image quality for DVDs - if the relative slowness of this unit doesn't bother you.

I haven't gone through all the bells and whistles yet, but the picture quality just floored me. Even my wife who really doesn't get the whole 'high def thing' was greatly impressed. We watched Pirates/Caribbean 2 and couldn't believe the quality.

Anyone looking to experience the formidable pleasures of watching movies on Blu-ray Disc, and at a reasonable startup cost, is advised to check out Sony's BDP-S300.

This is a magnificent Blu-ray DVD player. It enhances regular DVD viewing and presents Blu-ray discs in full 1080p (if you have a 1080p HDTV).

Home theatre systems have come a long way from the days of placing two huge speakers on either side of your television and listening to records while watching Saturday Night Fever on your VCR and television. These days there are as many ways to design a home theatre system as there are customers to buy them.

"The basics of the home entertainment system haven't changed much in the last 15 years or so. What have changed are people's tastes and priorities," explains Adam Bowden of Bose Home Theatre. "Fifteen to 20 years ago a home entertainment system meant music. People would spend hours in stores and bring in a variety of music and listen to the various speakers before selecting a unit to buy. Today a home entertainment system is a visual experience focused on movies, and people make decisions based on aesthetics, under the assumption (and rightly so) that the sound will be exceptional. They will purchase a home theatre system that is visually appealing and assume that the sound will be appealing as well."

"Prices are falling on flat panel televisions and the quality is going up so more people are incorporating bigger flat panels and surround sound into their home theatre system design," says Joe Strang, President of Show Case Home Theatres in Alberta. "The other big thing is the all-in-one touch pad controls."

The price of a home theatre system depends on how seriously you take your entertainment needs. According to Strang, you can buy a "big box" system for $5,000. But to really get the whole experience, he recommends having a custom system installed.

"You have to start with speakers, remote control, and flat panel all installed and you can do that for about $9, 000," he says.

But if money's no object then there's no end of fun to be had. "We've done media rooms that are $500,000 for one room. For that you get projectors that have better than movie theatre quality, sound so good that when someone's whispering on screen it feels like they're whispering in your ear."

Some homeowners go for the total theatre experience and have custom theatre seating installed in their media rooms, with one-touch remote controls in the arm of each chair, massage units and heated seats.

"We've even put motion in the seats so that when there's motion in the movie you feel it in your seat," he says. "And I don't mean it just vibrates...it actually moves."

Other options for your home theatre system include custom draperies, acoustic paint, and sound-proofing. This may seem like overkill but Strang says that most homes over $700,000 now come with a media room or dedicated home theatre room.

"I find that we usually install home theatre systems that are about 10 per cent of the value of the home, not just in the home theatre room but throughout the house, multi-room sound, lighting, automation and such. So for a $1.5 million home, you're looking at $150,000 worth of home entertainment equipment."

Video Selection #1 in Level Of Importance

1. Choose a TV at least 27 inches, preferably the bigger the better that will fit in your home theater area with plenty of room left over for comfort and a screen size that you do not have to strain to view.
Most larger TVs are as cheap as the smaller Tvs today...so get what you want the first time around.

The items listed below are what you should be concerned with in selecting a home theater system.

2. Flat screen TVs are the most common for good non glare viewing and are LCD (liquid crystal display) and have optional Plasma screens which is a display technology that you may not notice unless you have the two side by side.

9. DVD player/recorder/VCR play and or, record from DVD disks and can be separate components, or all in one unit called combo units. Some DVDs support Windows media such as CD/CD-RW for playing music and, or showing your stored pictures and music.

Sound Selection #2 In Level Of Importance.

Sound is not as important to some as related to the core of the home theater....which is the picture they see.
TVs have speakers built in that will suffice for the better part of us, but add a few good speakers and you have quality sound.

Your home theater room, or area plays a major part in how the sound is interpreted in relation to the acoustics of the room,size, furniture, walls, curtains, carpet etc that absorb the signal. As an example a long rectangle room with carpet will have better acoustics than a square room with hardwood floors.
Really do not expect exact movie theater sound from your existing rooms because a theater is designed especially for this purpose, unless you plan to build a special room. Whatever you decide you will experience better sound with the right components.

1. AVR Receivers control every aspect of your sound system and video and is the brain that takes the video portion then transmits signals into sound. AVR Receivers come in various watts that have separate channels to control and balance speakers.

2. Speakers come in all sizes and shapes and are a good investment if you want the most out of sound . The quality of sound is determined by the watts of power they produce..ie a 100W will produce more sound quality than a 50W. The receiver is matched in wattage to correspond with the wattage of the speaker. Of all the audio components below, speakers are the most important of all so get the best you can.

3. Sub woofers increase the bass capabilities of your sound system. Not a necessity unless you like the sound of thundering explosions in an action movie.

4. Surround Sound will deliver a cinematic sound quality to your home theater, but is not an essential component.

Home Theatre Mini System ("In A Box")

With a mini system all you need is the TV and installation is much easier than using separate components which may require you hiring a professional. You can get a mini system with just about any feature you want to include DVD/DVR/VCR/AVR/CD, speakers, sub woofers, surround sound etc...The systems are much cheaper in cost than purchasing separate components and the drawbacks are you may be limited on what you can output if you want additional add-on such as video games,extra speakers etc. The mini home theater is basically to run the components provided in the kit and if you want to add on you may not be able to. Another drawback is you may be sacrificing superior video and sound quality for lower a price. Just like anything else there are good mini home theaters and better ones...So get the best if you go this route.

How Voltage Converters Work

Voltage converters, often called voltage transformers, enable you to use 110v TV, VCR, or DVD player with a 220v outlet or vice versa. Step down converters will lower the voltage from 220v to 110v (or other voltage ranges) while step up converters will raise the voltage from 110v to 220v (or other voltage ranges).

When Do You Need a Voltage Converter?

A voltage converter or transformer is needed when traveling to other countries where the standard voltage differs from the standard used in your own country. I am writing this article from the view of someone who grew up without cable TV. We had 3 major networks and PBS plus a couple local UHF stations. In the late 1970's we finally got cable added to our street, needless to say this was a pretty big deal. It allowed us to view newcomers HBO, ESPN, and CNN. The next step was being able to record and view previously recorded movies so I went and purchased a VCR in 1980. I practically needed a forklift to get it to my car because of its size and along with that it was only a 2 head model plus the remote control wasn't wireless, it was hooked up by a cable. This was RCA's top of the line recorder at that time and cost $800.

I waited over 20 years for my next move up the technological scale and finally got a DVD player that would record television shows. The recording aspect of these machines never lived up to my expectations because of hardware problems, bad disc (which would stop recording in the middle of shows) or just plain difficulty of use. I was just never that pleased with the DVD recorders.

It was because of the dissatisfaction with the DVD recorder that I finally went online and bought a used cheap TIVO DVR. This turned out to be my best entertainment purchase since 1980.

I have been a subscriber to DirecTv for quite a few years and knew that I could hook a TIVO up with their system. Hooking the DVR up was as easy as setting up the old VCR. Satellite line in, output cable to the TV, and you're in business. Of course this is where the fun starts. You have a schedule menu that looks like the ones you have with your regular cable or dish setups listing all of the programs and their times. This feature is updated daily and run for about ten days in advance allowing you to program what you want to record that far ahead. If you have any of the movie stations you will find yourself programming movies starting at 2:20 a.m. 9 days down the road, forgetting about it and having it show up in your list guide waiting to be viewed.

I use a twin lnb receiver which allows me to record two different shows at once, but that's only half of it. While those two shows are recording I'm able to watch any of the shows that I've already recorded. Talk about efficiency, there is practically no wasted time spent in front of the television . Lets say you're a CSI fan and you have to go out for an appointment the night the show airs, and lets say it starts at 10:00 p.m. You get back from your appointment and it's only 10:15. What are you going to do now, wait until 11:00 to watch the show and get to bed late? Not with the TIVO. You can start watching the show at 10:15 from the very beginning. If you skip through the commercials during the show you will be will be finishing up during the normal time of 11:00 since commercials take up about 20 minutes per show. It's a great feature to have.

Another great feature is the list guide of all of the shows that you have already recorded. I don't know about you but I accumulate way too many tapes over the course of 25 years. I practically needed a storage shed to for them. With the list guide you just scroll down and pick what you want to watch. It is clean and simple. No more tapes strewn about the house, half of which were mislabeled, old, or just plain useless.

If you have a favorite actor, musician, sports team, or just about anything with a name you can have TIVO remember it. Lets say your a big Harrison Ford fan and you don't want to miss any of the movies he will be showing up in the future. All you do is type his name in your favorites section and Tivo will record anything with Harrison Ford in it forever, or until you remove him from your favorites list.

The number of shows you can store varies with the size of the hard drive on your TIVO DVR. I have a rather small one and am still able to store 100 hours. For me this is adequate. Some would prefer more and it's not a big deal to upgrade or you can just get a larger one with your initial purchase.

There are more features that make a TIVO dvr a good deal for your entertainment dollar, but I don't really have the time or space to go into it at this time. Your main benefit is that you won't be spending wasted hours in front of a television watching something that you have little interest in.. UPDATE: The laser has a very poor error tolerance. DVDs must be in PERFECT condition for playback and recording. Mine has some tolerance with the first half of a DVD but the second half must be flawless.

I've made about a dozen DVDs with this DVDR. All of them were to get shows off of my DVR. I haven't tried recording scheduled shows. Using the S-Video input works great and looks sharp. I haven't used the firewire input yet but I plan on it working out well. The DVDR makes a nice menu for your recorded shows and auto inserts chapters. The auto chapter tends to insert chapters when the video is quiet, or after a certain period of time (10 minutes or less.) If you want you can put in your own chapters too. You can also specify a picture from the show for display on the menu, so there is a picture and a title of the track. I'm also quite happy with the editing option available for using a DVD-R or DVD+R. There are more editing options if you use a DVD-RW. It also plays NTSC and PAL. I'm guessing it also plays NTSC and PAL variants too.

Disappointments: I recorded a disc that had an error on it. There was a defect on the DVD itself. Because of this, the DVDR was unable to close the disc. I can still play it on the DVDR but another DVD player and even my computer cannot recognize the DVD. When editing the DVD you cannot use any of the play functions like fast-forward, rewind, pause, etc. You have to re-load the disc to get out of editing mode to use those functions again. CANNOT record onto dual layer discs. Records onto single layer 4.7gb only. The remote control buttons could have been thought out better.

Conclusion: I was looking for a DVDR that had an S-Video input so I could get videos from my cable DVR to my computer and DivX. I got a DVDR that could also record from my MiniDV camcorder and a whole lot of functionality. INCLUDING DivX playback which is AWESOME.

Extra info, a.k.a SECOND UPDATE: Unit will use a PATA aftermarket DVD burner designed for a desktop computer. The drive unit can be connected to a computer as well even though it doesn't have an eject button. The aftermarket DVD burner I used (Lite-On) was unable to close any discs.

Bottom Line: Great idea, I wish I didn't have to flash it to get it to work.

I bought this recently at a Best Buy and was terribley dissapointed when I found out that there was no s-video for the vcr and the only way to have the vcr and dvd player share the same output was to use composite, and so after setting up this unit to two different inputs (one for composite and the other for component) I tried watching a movie on dvd and found that this unit responds almost instantly to commands from the remote and the unit only makes sounds when it's reading the disc. For the vcr, it plays fine, but since I only need it to play vhs tapes, I haven't tried recording anything, so I wouldn't know about that.

It's a great dvd player, but so-so as a dvd-vcr combo.

This combo does everything I wanted, and so far it does it well (after two weeks). I could have given it 5 stars. I don't have any complaints. I needed a new vcr, but I couldn't find one. For one thing, I still have an analog input signal, so I needed a combo that has an analog tuner, which most combos don't have. I'm fully satisfied with the quality of the vcr recordings and playback, and now I can also record and play back using a dvd. The quality of the recordings and playback is good.

I'm sure that I'll start recording just about everything on dvd now. I have found over the years that vhs tapes aren't good for recording and rerecording many times (I have found that the tapes begin to bind, especially if you only record for a short period, like a half hour or an hour), but apparenlty I won't have that problem when using dvd-rws.
